The Caswell-Massey Number Six fragrance dates back to 1772, when Dr. William Hunter created it at his apothecary in Newport, Rhode Island. The company that grew from that apothecary, Caswell-Massey, has been making fragrances and personal-care products in America for more than 270 years.

And here’s where the history gets even better…

George Washington was a fan of Number Six. Historical accounts say Washington purchased the fragrance for his personal use, and tradition holds that he gave Number Six to his close friend and Revolutionary War ally, the Marquis de Lafayette.

Washington and Lafayette developed an extraordinary friendship during the American Revolution. Lafayette, a young French aristocrat, came to America at just 19 years old to fight for the American cause. He served on Washington’s staff, fought alongside the Continental Army, and eventually became one of Washington’s closest confidants. Their relationship grew so close that Washington regarded Lafayette almost as a son.

In fact, Lafayette later named his only son Georges Washington Lafayette in honor of his friend.
